Manchester, NH, USA III, 2020
This drawing records a brief but concentrated moment in Manchester during a rally for President Donald J. Trump on August 15, 2019. Capturing just a few hours at a specific place and time, the work focuses on the movements, density, and atmosphere of a single public gathering, showing how quickly the city can shift.
Cities have long been sites of civic debate, and in Manchester that role became visible as streets that had otherwise felt sparse and routine were temporarily transformed. Observed from the street, the event was largely orderly and unexpectedly civil, marked by competing messages and shifting crowds. Alongside these broader dynamics, the drawing records small, everyday details, including stalled traffic, impatient crossings, and minor disruptions that continued around the event. Together, these observations show how public space absorbs moments of collective intensity within the flow of everyday life.
