Artist Statement

For over two decades, Larissa Fassler has mapped the emotional, political, and physical contours of urban life through large-scale drawings, paintings, and architectural sculptures. Her work focuses on public sites such as train stations, plazas, monuments, and neighbourhoods, where social tensions are inscribed in architecture and everyday experience. These spaces often act as proxies for broader systems of power, and she approaches them as both subject and material.

Fassler’s process begins with fieldwork. She walks sites for hours, measures space with her body, and observes how people move, gather, or clash. She records fragments of conversation, signage, and data, layering them with archival and media research. These materials accumulate into dense, hand-drawn compositions that resemble maps or architectural plans, merging analysis with embodiment to reveal how inequality, power, and memory shape public space.

Through drawing and sculpture, Fassler assembles information in ways that highlight both structures of power and lived experience. Her work does not propose solutions; instead, it asks viewers to look more closely at the spaces they inhabit, to see the forces at play, and to recognise how the built environment both reflects and produces the conditions of collective life.
