Moritzplatz—Forms of Brutality, 2019

Moritzplatz, Berlin is currently a hotspot of gentrification, yet the area carries an exceptional history shaped by trauma. Using an embodied mapping approach grounded in lived experience and site-based walking, combined with archival and internet-based research, I examined pre-war maps and imagery, including the urban fabric and courtyard formations of Berlin circa 1910, as well as Allied bombing patterns mapped in varying shades of red.

A second, post-war layer reveals the footprint of the Berlin Wall, including guard towers and the so-called death strip. A third layer, representing the present and projected future, maps current and anticipated rental prices and documents the developers and corporations acquiring large tracts of land for high-end offices, restaurants, and luxury retail. The resulting conflicts, struggles, and protests are also recorded.
