Moritzplatz — FORMS OF BRUTALITY
2019

Pen, pencil and acrylic paint on canvas
Dimensions: (2X)  170 x 180 cm

Berlin: Moritzplatz — Currently a hotspot of gentrification, the area carries an exceptional history marked by trauma. Using a psychogeographical approach combined with archive and internet-based research I examined pre-war maps and imagery. These included the urban fabric and courtyard formation of Berlin ca. 1910 and the Allied bombings of the area, marked in varying reds. A second, post-war layer reveals the footprint of the wall, guard towers and “death strip”. A third layer, representative of todays existing reality captures current and future rental prices and documents the developers and corporations that have begun buying tracts of land for high-end offices, restaurants and luxury retail. The ensuring conflicts, struggles and protests are also chronicled.
